What should you actually hand to an AI agent?
What should you actually hand to an AI agent? That is the real question, and it is a much more useful one than whether AI is impressive. Impressive is easy. What matters for your business is where the line sits: what you can safely give an agent today, and what you keep for yourself.
The one line to remember
Hand it anything that can be undone. Keep anything that cannot. That is the whole rule, and everything else is just examples.
What belongs with an agent?
Anything reversible. If a task goes wrong and you could fix it in two minutes, an agent should own it. Drafting a post. Writing a first reply to a customer. Sorting an inbox. Pulling a report together. If the agent gets it wrong, you just redo it, and no real harm is done. That “no real harm” is the test.
What do you keep?
Anything you cannot take back. Sending money. Publishing something to the world. Deleting a record for good. Signing a contract. These wait for a human, every single time, no exceptions. Not because the agent could not physically do them, but because a mistake there is permanent, and permanent mistakes are the only expensive ones.
Here is the good news
Most of the work in a business is the first kind. The repetitive, reversible stuff is what actually eats your day, and almost none of it needs you personally. That is exactly the work an agent should take off your plate. You are not handing away the important decisions. You are handing away the busywork that was never important in the first place.
The mistake to avoid
People try to prove AI is powerful by pointing it at the scariest, most irreversible task they can think of. That is backwards. Start the other way round. Give away the boring reversible work first, get comfortable, and keep your hand firmly on anything permanent. Do that and you get most of the benefit with almost none of the risk.
I build AI agents that run all parts of my online business. Check them out at pelleforsman.com.
